Halloween Blahs

The sun never came up this morning.  He was tired, so he send his substitute celestial, the Illuminated Grey Overcast.  It is third period, here at the Institute.  The inmates are busily squirrelling away on their Movie Poster Assignment.  They are hardened coastal people, and I have heard nary a complaint about the weather.

Yesterday afternoon I helped out with the Junior High Halloween Dance.  I only went to one JH dance when I was a kid, and it was a miserable affair in the gym, with flashing lights, loud music and brutal games of "crack the whip."  This dance was not that different.  The kids don't actually dance.  Most of the actual dancing was done by faculty (so many of my fellow male teachers were such good dancers I started to think it was a requirement to teach Junior High), the mentally disabled kids, and a few dance nerds.  The principal came in a few times to yell at the kids for playing with balloons (I don't want to pick up the rubber shreds, either).  The best part was when the kids rigged up the Dance Dance Revolution game so they could play it with joysticks (which begs the question, why?).  I stayed mostly to help clean up the blood.

I have a vague recollection of one dance in the 6th grade. It ended at 6 p.m., the only ones dancing were the dance nerds and the teachers. It must be protocol everywhere.

I kept a diary in seventh grade. I can't tell you how many times it said "Went to class dance. Will never go again."
